Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]

Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs)

Uploading my brand-new author icon to Commons[edit]

About a week ago, a Redditor by the name of "LeoTheFloofyDragon" delivered this portrait of my blue-furred tanuki avatar, which I intend to use not only as the top-left icon for my creative-venture wiki, but also my WP userpage portrait. (This becomes important in the commentary for an FTA post I'm currently preparing on MH, my first since late June.) Before any of you ask, here's a transcript from RDT chat on Saturday afternoon confirming his permission:

Routhwick: "Afternoon, Leo. Care if I give you a reminder before long?"

LeoTheFloofyDragon: "Reminder?"

R: "Yep. Uploading soon (with your kind permission) under my wiki's preferred PD waivers."

L: "Ofc!
"I just ask that you credit me as the maker of that piece somewhere if you don't mind"

R: "As I always do in my descriptions/commentary."

L: "Awesome, tysm :3"

If The Harvett Vault (talk · contribs) could do it (sorry if Commons gave you a hard time on your uploads recently), then so might I. Any further advice? --Slgrandson (talk) 18:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Slgrandson: if the artist wants attribution, I would recommend strongly against a PD waiver. That does not retain the right of attribution. Use {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} instead.
I'm going to assume right now that the artist has not formally transferred copyright to you; if they have, then this gets more complicated. Say so below and I'll give you the more complicated version.
The simplest way to clarify permission would be for the artist to add a comment to that Reddit post indicating the license they are offering (again, presumably {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}}) and how they want to be attributed. Then anyone (including you) can upload that, citing that page as the source, and using the indicated license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 21 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: Any moment soon, I'll remind Leo of COM:VRT (né OTRS) to save face. (Pinging now before this gets stale.) --Slgrandson (talk) 21:13, 28 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: Relayed your advice/my VRT suggestion to Leo via RDT chat. Still awaiting further consultation from another 1-3 Commons clerks before I move ahead. (Happy Labor Day!) --Slgrandson (talk) 00:19, 5 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: Just gave Leo an "ELI5" ("Explain Like I'm Five") on the licensing requirements + VRT. Any further developments, and I'll reach back. Anyone else to give us a hand? --Slgrandson (talk) 07:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Slgrandson: I agree with Jmabel on this. Five year olds may not license their content.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 08:03, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, but that "ELI5" bit is just an expression. --Slgrandson (talk) 08:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: Sadly, Leo's had second thoughts about the Commons go-round; from what I heard from him on the 11th, he doesn't want his real name out (though I suggested his Reddit handle should be O.K.). Would you mind perhaps if I did the honours on his behalf instead? (Either under the terms you recommended earlier, or under my preferred ones.) Apart from @Jeff G., anyone else care to weigh in further? --Slgrandson (talk) 23:58, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Slgrandson: if you are doing on his behalf, then we need the VRT. And he may choose any attribution he likes. - Jmabel ! talk 01:00, 20 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry, @Jmabel. Pinged Leo again yesterday, asking for the license option; haven't heard back from him yet. What's a long-time furry friend/wiki webmaster to do? --Slgrandson (talk) 23:13, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sorry to keep this hanging around here, @Jmabel et al., but this might as well be the (second-to-)last on-hold ping on this matter. If this goes nowhere, we'll try our luck with another artist soon and hope they respond with the license confirmation. Otherwise, I'll let you know if things have changed. --Slgrandson (talk) 08:27, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Remove new versions of photo?[edit]

Graphic content warning. I tried to upload a new version of this image with blurring on the genitals, however, didn't realise this was actually going to override it, so I reverted. Is it possible to remove my version and the revert, so it is restored to the original file? Zenomonoz (talk) 03:38, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Zenomonoz: You can revert to a specified version by clicking "revert" in the file history table. The file looks like it's back to the original version to me, so you don't need to do anything further. (It's OK for the history to have mistakes in it.) If you want to upload a censored version of the photo, you can put {{own based|Self Fisting.jpg}} in the source field. —CalendulaAsteraceae (talkcontribs) 05:43, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I managed to do it. If you have time, please check I did it correctly in case some of the image details are wrong. Zenomonoz (talk) 05:59, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Rulers Without Numbers or Units Considered Harmful[edit]

please pardon the voice dictation on my mobile device.

I've been browsing images such as this,

, and as you can see, this biomedical photo helpfully includes a ruler for scale.

I found at least one other, where enough of the ruler markings were visible that I could suss out the units I needed to know, but I was wrong on the first guess.

Therefore, I humbly suggest that incomplete rulers or measuring apparatus that does not fully declare its units and scale are rather confusing to viewers and may result in incorrect interpretations. Might as well use a subway or laundry token.

We are an international operation, and there are chiefly two units of measuring distance in use, so we do have a 50/50 chance of getting it right, but why the ambiguity?

Proposals: catalog all such images we can find; place errata in the image descriptions, wherever possible, and if completely ambiguous, then we will notify the uploader, who may know more background or context. in the likely event that an uploader is not responsive, let's crop these rulers out of images, so they cannot confuse, and they cannot tarnish the image's artistic/educational aesthetic.

Elizium23 (talk) 11:20, 5 October 2023 (UTC) Elizium23 (talk) 11:13, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Elizium23: Generally, metric rulers I have seen have gradations of 10 and imperial rulers have gradations of multiples of 2, but this one has 5. Perhaps @Hardwareonkel could comment on the ruler for that photo, or we could guess at metric given their use of the German language.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 13:42, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jeff G.: You're not looking quite hard enough. At the top edge of the image, half of the larger ticks extend off the edge of the image, and half of them stop just barely short of the edge, so it is actually marked in groups of ten, subdivided into fives. I expect they're millimetres, but I've got at least one ruler marked in tenths of an inch, so I wouldn't be entirely confident. --bjh21 (talk) 16:12, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
that's perfect... problem solved, I mean no problem close thread Elizium23 (talk) 06:12, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Elizium23 The ruler is in Millimeter so the largest fragment is about 8mm. I have been provided with this material beeing put into a little plastic tube with glycerin inside. I wanted to keep it but recognized, the are falling apart. This leads me to the assumption that this "stones" were one a larger part as they were still in the gall bladder. Most probably they were larger because at least 5-8 particles are not on the photography but fell off from another larger part before. Unfortunately I do not have a larger photo at the moment. Maybe I can find the orginal somewhere. Hardwareonkel (talk) 16:55, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Befuddled![edit]

I search for Pablo Casals and get a stream of unrelated images. Worse, attempting to use the 'search' windows does not help, and the 'slide show' feature seems to have disappeared. I want images of Pablo Casals {the cellist} taken in Israel in 1973: how do I go about searching for them? Cheers! Shir-El too (talk) 19:08, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Shir-El too Have you looked at Category:Pau Casals? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:29, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
No, I haven't. Will try again and see what happens. Cheers! Shir-El too (talk) 19:39, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you very much! However, there is too much room for confusion. Some images did come up under 'Pablo Casals' - so shouldn't there be a link or notice to also search under 'Pau Casals'? That may have been his birth name, but it WASN'T the name he was most known by. Cheers! Shir-El too (talk) 19:46, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If you had looked at Category:Pablo Casals, you would have found that it is a redirect to Category:Pau Casals. There's more than one search tool on here, so I don't know which one you are configured to use, but only a handful of people have any control over what results the search engines produce. That's one of the reasons that, besides using a search engine, it is often really worth going straight for any obvious category: categories are curated by humans, and some things humans often do better than computers. - Jmabel ! talk 21:03, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Shir-El too: FWIW, when I search on "Pablo Casals" the first hit I get is the page Pau Casals, which would take me at one further click to Category:Pau Casals. Did you have that page at the top or your result and ignore it, or are you on a different search engine that did not give you that page as a first hit? - Jmabel ! talk 21:06, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Jmabel: I honestly don't remember. Using the link @Gråbergs Gråa Sång sent me I did find specific results, though not what I hoped to find. Maybe I'm too spoiled by Google and DuckDuckGo: they're easy to use. Thank you anyway, and Happy Helping! Cheers! Shir-El too (talk) 08:43, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

video[edit]

Hello,how to upload a video in (avi)format to Wikipedia?Regards Viktoras Vinogradnas Viktoras Vin. (talk) 19:49, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hidden categories[edit]

Often in the "Categories" box at the bottom of images I see so-called "hidden" categories, e.g."CC-BY-SA-4.0" and "Self-published work". These are in a slightly smaller font, but patently they are NOT hidden, since they are displayed. So, in what sense are they "hidden"? Just curious. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 22:25, 5 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@ITookSomePhotos: They are hidden for those who are not logged in. Also, if you are logged in you can set a preference to not show them (Appearance → Show hidden categories). Anon126 ( ) 02:56, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

how do i know if a picture is copywrite or not[edit]

im trying to upload a picture but idk if its copywrite or not Ilovespeaknow (talk) 05:54, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ilovespeaknow The rule of thumb is that any random picture you find online probably can't be used on Commons. Details at Commons:Licensing. A more detailed answer needs more details. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:20, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If this means trouble, it might have to be removed...[edit]

Dear team, I just started contributing and theres one image that might be a problem. I attended a WikiCon in Austria and we had the permission to take pictures at a museum we visited. I took a picture of a picture which was on display there and shows a Tardigrada. The picture was taken with the help of an electron microscope and would be excellent to illustrate what is possible in this realm. What to do now? Call the muesum and ask for official permission - and a name to be published with the picture? Delete it to keep out of trouble? I'm not an expert regarding all the copyright and licensing stuff, so I ask for your opinion. If you think speedy removal is the only option, let me know what would have to be done in preparation to allow the display of pictures taken of exibitions (which permit fotos to be taken). Thank you in advance, best Llydia

This is the picutre I spoke about: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:400-fache_Vergr%C3%B6%C3%9Ferung_eines_B%C3%A4rtierchens_(Tardigrada).jpg Llydia (talk) 08:21, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

upload photo for my page[edit]

I created a Turkish Ned Luke page n i must upload Ned Luke's twitter-x pp to wikipedia but i cant... I wanna do, i should do this. Ceyhunnn K (talk) 08:24, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ceyhunnn K No you shouldn't. Just because a picture is online/on twitter, it doesn't mean it's acceptable on Commons or Wikipedia. "We" have basically 2 ways to "get" a picture of a living person like Ned Luke, either someone takes a picture of him with their own camera and uploads it on Commons themselves, or Ned Luke takes a selfie and uploads it on Commons himself. We can't just take nice-looking pics and use them, the photographer (in some cases, their employer) has to give their clear permission. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:56, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Like I said, we can't use that. Laws and copyright. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:46, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well ok. So it must be from a camera not from a link huh? How about downloading n uploading, changing name of the pic (in gallery n wikipedia)? Ceyhunnn K (talk) 15:16, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ceyhunnn K: No. That's like asking, "Is it OK if I steal something as long as I hide the fact that I'm stealing?" Copyright is a form of ownership. We don't post images that someone else owns the rights to and hasn't granted a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 15:39, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ahh ok i see but please just help me at this thing. Without a pic the page looks like didnt developed n empty. U got it? Thanks! Have a nice day. Ceyhunnn K (talk) 20:53, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Many pages of living people do not have photos. This is a pretty common situation. There are a lot of people in the world, including a lot of famous people, for whom there is no picture that is either free-licensed or in the public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 23:17, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Stop charging me[edit]

I did not ask for this. You charged my account. Lauren Tallman 2600:8801:118E:C900:619A:25B5:CF09:1F04 22:08, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I can assure you, Commons did not "charge" you. We do not even have a mechanism for doing such a thing. If someone who in some way charged you pretended to be Wikimedia Commons, it was pure and simple fraud. Plus, you are not posting here from any account, so there is no way here for anyone to work out if there was suspicious activity related to your account, whatever account that might be. - Jmabel ! talk 23:15, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Was your account charged by "Wikimedia" (the Wikimedia Foundation)? If so, you may have been asked to make a donation while browsing Wikipedia. If this is the case, please e-mail donate@wikimedia.org to ask about canceling a recurring donation. The Wikimedia Foundation owns and operates Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons (this site), and other related websites, but it is separate from the community of volunteers that provides assistance here. Attribution of a photo I just uploaded, plus entering it in this months silhouette challenge[edit]

I just uploaded a photo I took of the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse in Nashville, Tennessee and would like to allow free use, but only with attribution. How do I do that?

Plus, I would like to enter in it for this month's challenge of silhouettes. How do I do that? MarthaLu42 (talk) 04:21, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@MarthaLu42: It looks like you already have given a license that allows free use, with attribution. See Template:Cc-by-sa-4.0 for how to modify that so that you can specify the name you want attributed (otherwise, people will probably just use MarthaLu42, since that's all they've got to work with).
Assuming you are on a computer, at the bottom of Commons:Photo challenge/2023 - October - Silhouettes, first read the instructions, then hover your mouse where it says, "[To submit your picture to the challenge click the link below]". I think from there (if you've already read the instructions) it should be obvious. - Jmabel ! talk 05:25, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Public social media image[edit]

Hello, I've had an image deleted that I assumed would be okay. It's an image from a persons public social media. The press has already used images from the subjects public social media. Press guidance states images in a person public social media (not protected by privacy settings) can be used. See https://www.ipso.co.uk/media/1510/social-media-public.pdf so am I allowed to upload and use an image from someone's public social media for an article on here ? FashionLover66 (talk) 12:00, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@FashionLover66: There are stricter rules regarding copyright here: licensing policy. In short, images uploaded here must be free to use by anyone, for any purpose (including commercial purposes). Simply being made public on social media is not sufficient. There must be explicit permission from the copyright owner (likely the photographer) that complies with those rules. Anon126 ( ) 12:54, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It does say if you make an image public on social media you are putting it into the public domain, which makes it free to use ? FashionLover66 (talk) 13:31, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Negative. Being "available to the public" is not the same as public domain. Public domain is a legal term that deals with intellectual property rights. GMGtalk 13:44, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@FashionLover66: That document uses the expression "public domain" in some general sense meaning publicly available. It does not use it in the particular sense it has in reference to copyright, which means an absence of copyright. The document explicitly does not address anything about copyright. See its page 9. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:28, 7 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Existing screenshot templates seem to be for other types of situations. But, if you want, you can write a note in the page and place the file in one of the screenshot categories. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:12, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Just a note: Since the paper is available in PDF, I think it'd be better to extract the image from the document directly. However, when I tried to do this the colors were wrong (something to do with color profiles? I'm not very knowledgeable in this area), and my attempts to fix it were unsuccessful. How to remove images from the wrong category?[edit]

I detected that "Category:Saint-Barthélemy", which is supposed to contain media related to the caribbean island with this name, also contains some images related to a village in Switzerland called "Saint-Barthélemy VD", which obviously don't belong there. • You would probably do better to ask that question on the help desk of the relevant Wikipedia; you've asked at the help desk of Wikimedia Commons, and we really can't give you a solid answer to that. I'm assuming from the fact that you are writing in English that you mean the English-language Wikipedia; its help desk is en:Wikipedia:Help desk. - Jmabel ! talk 03:06, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Photo owned by an organization[edit]

If an organization holds the copyright to a photo, can they upload it to Wikimedia Commons and if so how do they go about it? Can any member of the organization upload the photo even though they personally didn't take the photo? Would they use the standard upload wizard? Fracton (talk) 01:13, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @Fracton: If it is clear why they would own the copyright, they can first publish it on their own web site and indicate the relevant license there. Then anyone, connected to the organization or not, can upload citing that as a source.
  • If that is not practical, or it is the sort of thing where they are likely to need to show proof of how they came to own the copyright, they should go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to provide a clear release of rights via email. This may end up requiring some correspondence back and forth to clarify the situation. - Jmabel ! talk 03:10, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Regarding the first option, would it be sufficient to put a sentence at the bottom of a webpage saying: "The image files on this page are hereby licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International" ? Fracton (talk) 20:03, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Fracton: Should be. Then cite that page as a source when uploading. The only difficulty would be if someone has reason to doubt that organization legitimately holds the copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 20:10, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

According to the coordinates given, the location is far West of Berchtesgaden (which is in the Berchtesgaden Alps/Berchtesgadener Alpen), namely in the community of Kreuth (which is in the Mangfall mountains/Mangfallgebirge). So the name should be changed. Accordingly, I did already change everything seemingly wrong except the file name. But if the coordinates and the Category:FFH-Gebiet Mangfallgebirge anterior to my changes are both wrong, it's the other way round. --Silvicola (talk) 20:18, 8 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Internal error when uploading audio file[edit]

I received an error that prevents me from updating the upload of my fileː here. It says [176da193-efc3-43bd-862a-27affe7961fe] 2023-10-07 13:33:01: Fatal exception of type "Wikimedia\Rdbms\DBUnexpectedError". This is the second time this has happened.

Question about renaming/re-labeling photo[edit]

Question on how to go about with an erronously labelled photo.

File:AS09-23-3511.jpg

File:AS09-23-3511 (22038475332).jpg

1969 photo taken by the Apollo 9 mission. The description (probably provided by NASA itself at the time?) says it shows the Hindu Kush mountain range. In this function it is also used on the Wikipedia, i.e. on the Hindu Kush article for 3 languages including the English wikipedia. After trying (and failing) to align this photo to available topographic maps and sat images, I at some point realized it does not show the Hindu Kush range at all. It shows the Namcha Barwa Himal range, which is the easternmost outlier of the Himalayan range. The Hindu Kush, which is the westernmost outlier of the Himalayan range, is more than 2000 km away and not at all visible in this image. Should I just edit the description and remove the picture from the 3 Wikipedia articles? D-M (talk) 08:02, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Tamatwi Well, the creator hasn't edited since 2013, so that doesn't help us. You may want to seek input at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scotland. If you do, try to be more specific to help others understand the problem. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:35, 10 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tamatwi Probably the right way to handle this is:
  • Use {{Fact disputed}} on File:Scottish_Highlands_and_Lowlands.png, with an explanation of your issue. Obviously, any specific sources you can cite on the matter will be helpful.
  • Upload your own version under a distinct filename. Again, citing sources is a good thing
  • On Wikipedia, on the talk page of the article in question, propose changing out the map in favor of your version. Or make the edit yourself, and explain on the talk page. - Jmabel ! talk 15:22, 10 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

#flickr2commons[edit]

Why does this program act in this way? Some of the files I uploaded lack a license. Is there a bug here? 20 upper 17:22, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@20 upper: I'm not certain, but I'm guessing it is because PD-mark isn't a valid license on Commons. It's a statement, without rationale, that "This work has been identified as being free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights." We require a rationale for a file being PD. (Note that someone can effectively put their own work into the public domain on Flickr by marking it with CC-0, but that's a different thing.) - Jmabel ! talk 17:58, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, that's the reason. The flickr image has a vague PDM tag instead of a specific tag. Commons accepts it at certain conditions, but it requires a check of the facts, a specific rationale and an additional step by a license reviewer. This case looks fine and the uploader can use the template:PD-author-FlickrPDM. License review can take a long time, but the file should be fine if it has a proper tag. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:39, 11 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you create painting from photos of holy martyrs, for example Saint Joan of Arc in my copyright?? AbchyZa22 (talk) 18:06, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Paintings even if made based on photos will probably be considered original works protected by copyright. They are not slavish copies. Ruslik (talk) 19:13, 12 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Derivative works potentially involve two copyrights, one for the original work and one for the newly introduced material. If the original work is in the public domain, then the legal status is entirely the same as if your work had been wholly original.

Problem with a category infobox - updated info not displaying[edit]

Hi all, I am trying to correct some incorrect info that appears in the infobox (is that the term?) for a Commons category, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Leycester_Creek_railway_bridge,_Lismore. The issue is that the image displayed (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lismore,_NSW_-_panoramio.jpg) is not of the bridge in question, and also has incorrect coordinates (28° 48′ 07.7″ S, 153° 16′ 16.43″ E) that are correct for the bridge in the displayed image, but not for the nominate item (Leycester Creek Railway Bridge in Lismore, NSW, Australia). I believe this information is being drawn from wikidata via the page at https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q55886116, so a few hours ago I edited that page to display an image of the correct bridge (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Leycester-ck-bridge-2023-1.jpg), plus put in the correct coordinates which are 28°48′18″S 153°16′22″E. However the Commons category page is not (yet) displaying the revised information, either in the browser I have been using for the updates (which may have caching issues perhaps) or a different browser I have not used before. So I am wondering whether I have done something wrong, or there is just some lag in the system before the updated information will be displayed on the Commons category page concerned. Any advice appreciated! Regards - Tony Rees, Australia Tony 1212 (talk) 02:29, 14 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Files on Wikimedia Commons are free to use by anyone for any purpose. Some files do have an attribution requirement, so you would need to attribute the author in a reasonable fashion. COM:REUSE is a helpful read. Abzeronow (talk) 18:31, 14 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Do be careful to look at the specific licensing indicated on the file page for each image, because licensing requirements differ (though none of them require money). Also, remember that while we (Commons) do our best to be accurate about the copyright status of each image, we do not provide legal guarantees. If you are going to put out a book, and you have no expertise on copyright yourself, you would do well to have it reviewed before publication by someone who has that expertise. - Jmabel ! talk 18:43, 14 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Technically, if you look at the file history near the bottom of the file page for the photo, you will see a link, "Upload a new version of this file". Click it to upload a new version. - Jmabel ! talk 03:38, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

For use in Wikipedia pages about villages, towns, cities etc.[edit]

Hi. I maked the map of Okhtyrka Raion (Ukraine) and uploaded this to Commons to use file for pages about populated areas. But I have one problem: to start using this image, I need to make it so that on the map will be geographical marks and location of objects of pages on this map. But how? @Trostianchanyn: en:Template:Location mark (and its equivalent in other Wikipedias). - Jmabel ! talk 21:07, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Renaming a category[edit]

I have tried to rename categories in the past but the advice online was to redirect the category to the new name and then manually move every individual image to that new category. I want to rename Category:Skitouring to Category:Ski touring (per its name in en-WP, which is also its COMMONNAME) but is there an easier way without having to manually move the individual images as well (i.e. there they are also automatically moved)? thanks. Hello Aszx5000, the tool Cat-a-lot is the solution for this task. Its a mighty tool and should be used careful. Regards --Wilhelm Zimmerling PAR (talk) 13:03, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for that - I will certainly try it (and with care)! Aszx5000 (talk) 13:53, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Wow - watched the helpful video and it worked a charm! thanks again. Aszx5000 (talk) 14:08, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How can i add information to a specific topic. 117.203.16.207 17:37, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

You are here at Commons, not at Wikipedia. Go to en:Help:Contents. --Túrelio (talk) 19:02, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Indianwaterway: I have no idea what a kod is, but you were logged in when you wrote this, hence the successful signature. - Jmabel ! talk 21:11, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Flags and Coats of arms of Venezuela is free license[edit]

Ok, with respect to the coats of arms in Venezuela, I read the 1999 Constitution, the constitution of each state and the Organic Law of Municipal Public Power, all coats of arms and flags are public (that is, free licenses). AbchyZa22 (talk) 21:33, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@AbchyZa22: Meaning that no one can do a rendition of it and have any copyright on their rendition? Or just meaning the usual situation that the blazon is public domain? Could you indicate the relevant passage in the Constitution? I couldn't quickly spot it. - Jmabel ! talk 22:59, 15 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Uploading a photo[edit]

My name is Duchess Harris and I am trying to upload a photo to my Wikipedia Page. Mocha54 (talk) 01:29, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mocha54: it looks like you have been directly editing the English-language Wikipedia page about yourself, and that you haven't declared the conflict of interest. I strongly urge you to read en:WP:COI and en:WP:Autobiography, make the relevant disclosures, and not directly edit the article about yourself in the future, or you are very likely to have your account blocked on the English-language Wikipedia.
None of that is directly Wikimedia Commons' concern, but I'm an admin on both projects.
Here on Commons we don't have that particular concern (much less of a problem of conflict of interest in providing a photo), but we do have the issue of copyright. As for uploading a picture of yourself:
  • If you are uploading a selfie, it's simple: just use Special:UploadWizard, and it will be obvious what to do.
  • If you are uploading a picture someone else took of you:
    • If the photographer signed the copyright over to you, you'll need to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to send them a copy of the document that transferred copyright to you so it is clear that you have the right to grant a license to use the photo.
    • If, as is more typical, the photographer still owns the copyright, then there are three ways this can proceed:
      1. If the image has not been previously published, then the photographer can open an account here and upload it, granting a license themself as part of the upload process.
      2. If there is a website or web page clearly under control of the photographer (e.g. their own website, Flickr stream, publicly visible social media posting, etc.), then they can publish the picture there and indicate the license. Then anyone, including you, can upload the image to Commons, citing the relevant URL as the source.
      3. The photographer can go through the process outlined at COM:VRT to provide a license for the photo. Anyone, including you, can then upload the image to Commons, following the process described at Template:PP. Sometimes it is more convenient to upload first, so the email to VRT can reference the URL of the page; that's fine as long as the email is sent within hours after uploading.
In all cases, the actual uploading can be accomplished through Special:UploadWizard. Once the image is on Commons, it can be used in the article as described at en:Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Images#How to place an image.
I hope that answers your [implicit] question. - Jmabel ! talk 02:35, 16 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
